I’m a huge fan of Twitter. It seems that in the social marketing arena people are either in love with Facebook or they are in love with Twitter. I’m a twitter girl and this is why.
First, it’s really easy to gain followers that are targeted for your particular blog. I’ll talk about that in a minute.
Second, every time you tweet it becomes a very important kind of backlink that helps with your search engine rankings. You can have only 5 people following you, but if you’re tweeting all day, those tweets get indexed in the search engines and they become very high quality backlinks. Further if you tweet consistently during the day, your followers will increase all on their own. Why? Because some people use tools to find out who the active tweeters are and follow them. Guess how you become an active tweeter without sitting at Twitter all day? You use the free Twitter plugins that I discussed here. It automates it. How cool is that?
Last, a certain percentage of your followers will click through to your website, so it’s almost always free automatic traffic.
So how should you Twitter? This part is really, really important. You don’t want to set up a Twitter account and just follow anyone. That won’t work. This does.
Using your keywords, plugin them into Google and search the top 5 spots. Look at your competition and see if they have a link on their website to follow them on Twitter. If they do, click through and follow their FOLLOWERS. Don’t follow them. Follow their followers and a certain percentage will follow you back.
Don’t follow too fast or you will get your Twitter account cancelled. Follow about 100 people a day. If you unfollow, only unfollow about 25 a day. The more you follow, the more will follow you back. Simple. You have a limit of 2,000 people that you are allowed to follow, unless you also have 2,000 that are following you which rarely happens. The number of people you are allowed to follow past 2,000 depends entirely on how many people are following you. However, to make an impact, you will only need to follow 2,000.
Set up a Twitter account for each blog that you have. Now, if you have blogs that are on the same topic, you can use one account and just build on that. But if they are different, then set up it’s own individual account. Use different usernames, passwords, and emails. I usually just use admin@what-ever-my-blog-domain-is.com.
Now, go over to Socialoomph.com and set up a free account. In a free account, you can set up your Twitter account with an instant welcome message. DON’T follow their advice about not mentioning your website. That’s silliness. Write something like this in your welcome message:
“Thanks for the follow. Drop over at http://www.Your-Website.com and pick up a free…whatever. ”
Remember you only have 140 characters to work with in your welcome message, just like you do in Twitter. Keep it simple. Then when someone follows you, they will get this neat little message in the email box. Another nice plug for your website and very likely a click-through.
I would not bother upgrading at Socialoomph. The benefits you get from the free Twitter plugins out-weigh paying $29 a month to pre-tweet at Socialoomph.
Then set up your Twitter plugins and you off and running. Easy, instant, traffic and better rankings in the search engines.

Thanks for the tip about the welcome message. Sometimes other people really make me feel dumb. I just did it..
